mixed technique 40x32x5 cm
Dedicated to the only extant Toulouse-Lautrec self-portrait
A simple, empty frame, to be placed 1.20m from the floor. The frame’s dimensions – 40x32x5cm - are the same as the only existing self-portrait by Toulouse-Lautrec.
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (24 November 1864 – 9 September 1901), the French painter, printmaker, and illustrator, reached only 1.54m in adulthood.
He suffered a congenital health condition, attributed to inbreeding, developing an adult-sized torso whilst retaining child-sized legs.
If this is his self-portrait, we lose his image, but we recover the imagination.
‘Consistence is the last refuge of the unimaginative.’
Oscar Wilde
