Living Space (‘Lebensraum’) was one of the major ideological aims of Adolf Hitler, and an important component of Nazi ideology.

In this case, mercifully and non-menacingly, a Matisse ‘dancer’ is cut out of a surface (rather than pasted onto it) to make ‘the space’ come to life.
